The Eco-Schools programme is pupil-led, involving hands-on learning that gets the whole school and the wider community involved in exciting environmental projects.
Our Eco Committee is comprised of children from Year 1 to Year 6. The committee exists to provide a diverse range of children with the opportunity to participate in a range of activities in which they develop their understanding of current and future environmental issues as well as empowering them to take action under the ‘Think global, act local’ approach. Children meet at least twice a half-term to discuss, agree and to execute plans made. Children participating in the Eco Committee build upon their knowledge and experience of environmental causes as well as developing their cultural and Science capital. At the conclusion of the academic year, children can explain the challenges the world’s environments face and detail what people can do to help protect these environments.
The representatives for this year’s Eco Committee are:
Year 1: Mithran, Elia, Emily, Antoni
Year 2: Marianna, Max, Lottie, Leandro
Year 3: Ruth, David, Sophie, Alpha
Year 4: Maia, Hugo, Oreil, Kosi
Year 5: Sarah and John
Year 6: Ore and Lexie-lou
Having achieved and maintained our Eco Schools Green Flag Award (with Distinction) over the last two years, the focus for this year’s Eco Committee will shift towards working on a range of environmental projects with a view to enter the Primary Awards for Green Education in Schools (PAGES), an initiative promoting green activism in UK schools with strong links to subjects across the curriculum. This year, the work of the Eco Committee will be supported through after school clubs such as the Gardening Club and other various groups within the school.
Some of our projects planned for this year include:
-
Continuing to restore, maintain and develop the school’s pond area to increase biodiversity and to facilitate teaching and learning in Science across the school
-
Working with the Friends of Dartnell Park local community group to plant out and maintain responsibility for a raised bed within the park
-
Promoting energy efficiency both within the school and at families’ homes whilst raising awareness about the challenges of climate change
-
Further increasing biodiversity within the school through planting insect-friendly plants and wildflowers in a number of locations
-
Continuing to lead in recycling paper collection and promoting recycling through participation in art activities and running second-hand clothes and uniform swap schemes and sales
-
Participating in the RSPB’s Big Schools’ Birdwatch
-
Holding a plant sale in conjunction with Gardening Club to raise money for further eco projects in the school in addition to supporting an environmental charity of the pupils’ choice
