Year 5

Welcome to Year 5

Year 5 is an exciting and important stage in a child’s primary school journey. It is a year that allows children to embed and build upon the knowledge and skills developed throughout Lower Key Stage 2, whilst beginning to prepare for the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead in Upper Key Stage 2 and beyond. As pupils grow in confidence and maturity, we encourage them to become increasingly independent learners who take ownership of their learning, demonstrate resilience and embrace new responsibilities.

Throughout Year 5, children are challenged to think critically, solve problems and develop a deeper understanding across all areas of the curriculum. We aim to inspire curiosity and a love of learning through engaging lessons, practical experiences and opportunities to apply skills in meaningful and creative ways. Pupils are encouraged to ask questions, explore new ideas and develop the confidence to share their thoughts and opinions.

A strong focus is placed on preparing children for the transition into Year 6 and, ultimately, secondary school. We support pupils in developing important life skills such as organisation, time management, teamwork, leadership and personal responsibility. Children are encouraged to become role models within the school community and demonstrate our school values through their behaviour, attitude and commitment to learning.

Reading remains at the heart of learning in Year 5, with pupils exploring a wide range of high-quality texts to develop their comprehension, vocabulary and love of literature. In mathematics, children build fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills, while across the wider curriculum they have opportunities to investigate, create, perform and collaborate. Educational visits, enrichment activities and wider learning experiences help bring the curriculum to life and deepen pupils’ understanding of the world around them.

Each year group is also assigned an important role model for the children to research and learn about throughout the school year. We believe that connecting with famous and influential individuals broadens children’s horizons, develops aspiration and inspires them to achieve their full potential.

Year 5 have been assigned Maya Angelou, whose determination, resilience and powerful voice continue to inspire generations around the world.

We endeavour to create a happy, positive and inclusive learning environment where every child feels safe, valued and supported. Our doors are always open to listen, offer guidance and celebrate success. We recognise that every child is unique and work hard to ensure all pupils are challenged, encouraged and given the opportunity to flourish both academically and personally.

For us, every child matters and every child is an important part of the Year 5 team. We are committed to helping our pupils develop the confidence, independence and skills they need to thrive as they move towards the final stages of their primary education.
