Year 2

Year 2 at John Wood School & Nursery is a vibrant and exciting year where children continue to grow in confidence, independence and curiosity as learners. As the final year of Key Stage 1, Year 2 plays an important role in preparing children both academically and personally for the transition into Key Stage 2.

We have very high expectations of the quality of work produced and encourage every child to take pride in their learning and achievements. We provide children with a wide range of opportunities to develop, apply and extend their skills across the curriculum through engaging, creative and purposeful learning experiences.

Our dedicated and experienced staff team work hard to ensure that every child feels supported, challenged and inspired within the classroom. We strive to create a positive and inclusive environment where children feel confident to ask questions, take risks in their learning and celebrate their successes.

Children in Year 2 benefit from a rich and varied curriculum supported by outstanding facilities and opportunities, including our school library, forest school provision, outdoor learning experiences and exciting educational visits. These experiences help bring learning to life, deepen children’s understanding and encourage curiosity about the world around them.

Reading, writing and mathematics remain key priorities throughout Year 2. We encourage children to become fluent, confident readers and independent writers while continuing to develop problem-solving, reasoning and mathematical fluency skills. Children are encouraged to apply these skills across all curriculum areas in meaningful and engaging ways.

We also place great importance on children’s personal development, wellbeing and behaviour. In Year 2, we expect all children to follow the Golden Rules, demonstrate kindness and respect towards others and contribute positively to the school community. We encourage children to become increasingly organised and responsible by arriving at school prepared with the correct equipment, including stationery, PE kit and water bottles.

Alongside academic achievement, we celebrate the individuality and talents of all children. Whether their strengths lie within sport, music, art, creativity or leadership, we believe every child should feel valued and encouraged to develop their confidence and interests.

Each year group at John Wood School & Nursery is also assigned an inspirational role model for the children to research and learn about throughout the year. Through exploring the lives and achievements of influential individuals, children broaden their understanding of the world while being inspired to believe in themselves and their own aspirations.

Year 2 have been assigned Benjamin Zephaniah.
