Year 6

Year 6 is an exciting, rewarding and memorable year as pupils reach the final stage of their primary school journey. As the oldest children within the academy, Year 6 pupils are role models for the rest of the school and are expected to demonstrate excellent behaviour, maturity, responsibility and leadership in all aspects of school life.

Throughout the year, children are given many opportunities to take on additional responsibilities and contribute to the wider school community. Pupils may be selected as Prefects, House Captains and ambassadors, helping to support younger pupils, welcome visitors and represent the school at events and special occasions. These roles help children develop confidence, leadership skills and a strong sense of responsibility.

Year 6 pupils benefit from a rich and engaging curriculum that prepares them academically, socially and emotionally for the transition to secondary school. Children are encouraged to become increasingly independent in managing their learning, organising their time and taking responsibility for homework and personal study. A strong focus is placed on developing resilience, problem-solving skills and a positive mindset, ensuring pupils are fully prepared for the challenges and opportunities of Year 7.

As part of our preparation for secondary school, pupils take part in a range of additional experiences throughout the year. These include visits and workshops designed to promote personal safety, independence and life skills. Children are visited by Transport for London to learn about road and travel safety, and participate in Bikeability, developing confidence and awareness when cycling safely on the roads.

Reading remains at the heart of learning in Year 6, with pupils exploring a range of high-quality texts that challenge their thinking and develop their comprehension, vocabulary and critical analysis skills. Across English, Mathematics and the wider curriculum, children are encouraged to think deeply, work collaboratively and apply their knowledge in a variety of contexts. While SATs form part of the Year 6 experience, we focus on ensuring pupils feel supported, confident and proud of the progress they make throughout the year.

Each year group is also assigned an important role model for the children to research and learn about throughout the school year. We believe that connecting with famous and influential individuals broadens children’s understanding of the world and inspires them to make a positive difference.

Year 6 have been assigned Emmeline Pankhurst, whose determination, courage and commitment to equality continue to inspire future generations.

At the end of the year, we will put together a production to include everyone in the year group: actors, singers, the choir, directors, musicians, technicians and so on!  It really will be a celebration of all of the children’s talents.
