Role Models

At John Wood School & Nursery, each year group has been assigned an important role model for the children to research and learn about throughout the school year. We believe that connecting with these famous and influential individuals will not only broaden the children’s knowledge but also inspire them to reach for the stars.

We have carefully selected a diverse range of role models who represent our core values of ambition, independence, kindness, perseverance and respect. These individuals have left an indelible mark on society and continue to inspire generations.

To make this initiative even more meaningful, we will integrate these role models into some of our extra-curricular activities throughout the year. For example, workshops, assemblies or school trips related to our chosen role models.

For example, on National Poetry Day, Year 2 will celebrate the work of their Year Group Role Model Benjamin Zephaniah and Year 5 will listen to the poetry of Maya Angelou. These opportunities will provide our children with a hands-on experience and allow them to delve deeper into the lives and accomplishments of these extraordinary individuals.

Some classes will also be learning about these key figures as part of their curriculum lessons, such as Year 6 who learn about Emmeline Pankhurst when they study the suffragette movement in their English lessons.

Throughout assemblies, children will learn about the lives of all of these inspirational people, not just their own Year Group Role Models. We will also make explicit links between British Values such as democracy, rule of law and individual liberty when we learn about such role models as Nelson Mandela, Malala Yousafzai, Martin Luther King Jr and Rosa Parks.

Our chosen Role Models are:
